NEW LINKS – sites worth visiting and monitoring

THE OMKN IS COMMITTED TO ONGOING WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT TO ASSIST USERS IN THEIR SEARCH FOR CURRENT AND RELEVANT INFORMATION ON MUNICIPAL BEST AND BENEFICIARY SERVICE DELIVERY PRACTICES AND THE PROMOTION OF MUNICIPAL INNOVATION. NEW LINKS WILL BE ASSESSED AND ADDED REGULARLY TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO INFORMATION. 

  • GOVERNING (www.governing.com)
    This website provides comprehensive news and analysis on management, policy and politics to guide state and local government leaders and professionals by sharing ideas and identifying best practices.  News is provided as well on national political developments and technology and there are online resources including management resources and webinars.      

  • Green Cities California - This is a new website where ten cities in California share their ideas about how to green everything from the city’s energy supply to water treatment. The website contains best practices for cities and towns that are developing and implementing sustainability strategies.  The site currently has some 50 specific best practices for everything from water conservation, to creating green zones, to running zero waste programs or developing more effective commuting policies.  Some 65 other best practices are in the works, including some from outside the state.  Through time, we can expect to see a greater number of practices tailored to smaller towns and communities. 

  • Improvement and Development Agency for local government (IDeA)(www.idea.gov.uk).
    This agency is owned by the Local Government Association (UK) and its objective is to lead local government improvement by helping councils work through local partnerships to tackle priorities such as health, children’s services and promoting economic prosperity. The agency’s Beacon Scheme Awards program recognizes excellence in local government, the agency builds partnerships and networking on good practices and innovation, develops leadership programs, provides management and organizational development assistance to improve workforces and conducts peer reviews of council practices.

  • League of California Cities (www.cacities.org)
    The League is an association of California city officials who work together to share their knowledge and skills, exchange information and combine resources to influence policy decisions that affect cities. The League is affiliated with the Institute For Local Government, whose program areas include:  climate change, civic engagement, healthy communities, fiscal stewardship, intergovernmental conflict resolution, land use and housing and public service ethics.        

  • Ontario Business Program Guide -  Your resource for Ontario and federal government programs for small and medium-sized businesses.  

  • Sustainable Urban Development Association (SUDA) - SUDA periodically issues brief informational documents on topics related to urban development, and which are intended for general audiences.  A recent one lists some of the social benefits of sustainable urban development. 

  • United Cities and Local Government (www.cities-localgovernments.org)
    The UCLG supports international cooperation between cities and facilitates programs, networks and partnerships to build the capacity of local government. Over 1000 cities across 95 countries are members of UCLG and the website is a worldwide source of key information relating to local government.  Activities promote economic, social, cultural, vocational and environmental development and the principles of good governance, sustainability and social inclusion. 

  • Urban Institute (www.urban.org)    
    The Urban Institute was created by President Lyndon Johnson in the mid 1960’s to gather data and conduct independent nonpartisan research on problems facing U.S. cities. The Institute evaluates programs, offers technical assistance overseas and educates American on social and economic issues. A primary objective is to save government money and time through research on effective and efficient programs.  Specific issue areas include crime/justice, economy/taxes, education, welfare, housing, health and healthcare and work/income.
